Clay Lake

Challenge

The current WTW at Clay Lake, near Keady County Armagh comprises of DAF, RGF, GAC and manganese stages. During periods of peak demand, the RGF’s cannot manage the required output and manually managing the clear water tank is required to keep up with demand.

Solution

NIW had deemed that a solution be implemented on an urgent basis to improve the capacity of the site and its ability to react to increased demand, maintenance an outage event.

Murphy Dawson Wam (MDW JV) was engaged by NIW in November 2021to fast track the design and build of this project to ensure capacity over the summer of 2022. Work commenced on the ground January 2022 with the additional filters coming into service April 2022.

Result

The project consisted of:

The transfer 2 existing filter units from the Ballinrees WTW Pilot Plant. Bare metal refurbishment by a specialist contactor.

Diversion of existing services and construction of a reinforced concrete ground bearing slab.

Installation of refurbished filters on podium.

Erection of a structural frame around the filters and installation of cladding to match the existing building.

Incorporate the new filters into the existing process with the necessary pipework and controls.

Replace media and carry out maintenance on existing primary filters once installation and commission are complete.

Make improvements to the Cl2 dosing control.

Aiding in the review of the existing membrane plant and its viability

Installation of a site cabin for testing purposes.
