Waste Water Treatment works Tank Replacement

Challenge

Northern Ireland Water maintenance programme had identified deterioration in the existing glass lined steel tanks, primarily used for Sludge and Chemical storage across their sites in Northern Ireland. Due to the high level of risk of a failure a programme of works was put in place to replace the existing assets with in- situ concrete tanks. Through reginal surveys, Dawson Wam identified and prioritised tanks that were in danger of failure. These surveys formed the delivery programme for year 1-4 of the Tank Replacement Contract.

Solution

Tanks identified for replacement were drained and cleaned prior to demolition. Where possible tank replacement was sequenced to maintain the day-to-day sludge storage capacity of the site. Where this was not possible temporary sludge storage tank were set up for the duration of the construction period.

Site to site design solutions varied based on the existing tank base construction and the availability of design/construction information for the existing asset. Conditions required the base to be removed and bored concrete piling install as part of the design solution for the new tank.

Result

On each site the works included the design, construction, installation, testing and commissioning of the new asset. Stakeholder liaison was paramount on all sites to ensure no disruption was caused to the existing process and that the sites continued to meet their final effluent standards.
