King Post Walls

DAWSON-WAM designs and installs King Post retaining walls – also known as Berlin Walls or Soldier Pile Walls – for a wide variety of soil retention applications. This tried-and-tested system offers a cost-effective solution for retained heights of up to approximately 3.5 metres, making it ideal for both temporary and permanent works where a continuous wall is not required.

How the King Post System Works

King Post walls consist of isolated steel columns or beams positioned along the line of the proposed retaining wall, typically at centres between 1 m and 3 m. The spaces between the posts are infilled over the retained height, most commonly with precast concrete panels, although timber sleepers or steel panels can also be used depending on the application and client preference.

Installation Methods

At DAWSON-WAM, we install King Posts using a range of techniques to suit ground conditions and project requirements:

  • CFA-Bored and Cast-In-Place – A hole is augured using a Cased CFA piling rig, filled with concrete, and a steel H-section installed. The H-section’s webs allow the chosen infill panels to be fixed securely.
  • Driven Installation – Posts can be driven directly into the ground using vibro or impact hammers. While faster, this method requires greater positional tolerance compared to CFA boring.

Advantages of King Post Walls

  • Cost-effective for lower retained heights
  • Fast installation compared to some continuous wall systems
  • Flexible infill options for different aesthetics and functions

Suitable for a wide range of applications, including:

  • Road and embankment retention
  • Temporary works for excavation support
  • Retaining walls for commercial, residential, and industrial developments
